Pretreatment thrombocytosis predicts survival in colorectal cancer.

چکیده
It has been widely reported that platelets involve in occurrence and progression of multiple types of cancer [1]. As one of the most common indicator in clinical practice, platelets have gradually become a key tool for cancer management. Recently, investigations have been focusing on the role of pretreatment evaluated platelets, known as thrombocytosis, in predicting prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) which is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide; their results, however, still remains inconsistent. We are writing this letter to report our results of a meta-analysis to further estimate the association between thrombocytosis and CRC prognosis. Electronic databases of Pubmed and Embase were systematically searched until December 2015 using keywords of ‘‘platelet’’ and ‘‘colorectal cancer’’ together with other synonymies. All the records were screened by two investigators independently (H.Y and X.T). Studies reporting association between pretreatment thrombocytosis (defined as > 400 million per mL) and survival of CRC patients were included for quantitative analysis. The pooled effect size of hazard ratio (HR) was calculated by inverse variance weighted random-effects model, and the funnel plot and Egger’s test were adopted to assess potential publication bias. All statistical analyses were performed using Stata Software (version 11.0; StataCorp,College Station, Tex). A total of nine observational studies [2—9] were finally included for the meta-analysis. Overall we observed significant association between thrombocytosis and poor overall survival (OS) of CRC patients (HR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.15—2.28). Notably, as shown in Fig. 1, our subgroup analysis found pretreatment thrombocytosis could predict poorer overall survival for localized CRC (HR = 1.60, 95% CI = 1.29—1.98). However, this survival difference was no longer detected in patients with metastatic CRC (mCRC). The funnel plot showed good symmetry and the result of Egger’s test verified absence of publication bias (P = 0.914).

Preoperative thrombocytosis predicts prognosis in stage II colorectal cancer patients
PURPOSE Thrombocytosis is known to be a poor prognostic factor in several types of solid tumors. The prognostic role of preoperative thrombocytosis in colorectal cancer remains limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the prognostic role of preoperative thrombocytosis in stage II colorectal cancer. METHODS Two hundred eighty-four patients with stage II colorectal cancer who underwent ...
متن کامل[Evaluation of thrombocytosis as predictive factor in colorectal cancer].
UNLABELLED INTRODUCTION/AIM OF THE STUDY: Preoperative thrombocytosis proved to be a negative prognostic factor in several solid tumor. However, there is still debate in the literature regarding colorectal cancer. The aim of our study was to examine whether thrombocytosis is an independent risk factor for metastasis development and predictor of survival in colorectal cancer. MATERIALS AND MET...
متن کاملThe association of pretreatment thrombocytosis with prognosis and clinicopathological significance in cervical cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Previous studies reported inconsistent findings about the relationship between pretreatment thrombocytosis and survival in patients with cervical cancer. This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of thrombocytosis in cervical cancer. We searched databases to identify relevant articles. Pooled hazard ratios (HRs), odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculat...
متن کاملHigh pretreatment plasma D-dimer predicts poor survival of colorectal cancer: insight from a meta-analysis of observational studies
D-dimer, one of the canonical markers of hypercoagulability, was reported to be a potential prognostic marker of colorectal cancer. However, an inconsistent conclusion existed in several published studies. Thus, we performed this meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive insight into the prognostic role for pretreatment D-dimer in colorectal cancer. Six databases (English: Pubmed, Embase and Web...
متن کاملThrombocytosis portends adverse prognostic significance in patients with stage II colorectal carcinoma
Thrombocytosis portends adverse prognostic significance in many types of cancers including ovarian and lung carcinoma. In this study, we determined the prevalence and prognostic significance of thrombocytosis (defined as platelet count in excess of 400 K/μl) in patients with colorectal cancer. We performed a retrospective analysis of 310 consecutive patients diagnosed at our institution between...
